Today at Camp — Canoeing
By Department Head – Garrett Steagall
Canoeing, an activity that many campers eagerly anticipate, will once again be offered at LYC Texas in 2025.
Our Canoeing activity covers essential safety measures, including learning about the canoe and paddle, paddle strokes, and techniques for effective canoeing. Our first class will be a two-hour training session on the campground lake, where we will practice the canoeing strokes we’ve learned, show how to handle a swamping situation, and learn hands-on how to rescue a swamped canoe.
Our second class will be a half-day trip to Lake Athens, allowing campers to enjoy a longer journey with ice pops and a fun game or two on the water.
This year, the Canoeing Staff is focusing on three key characteristics: leadership, teamwork, and excellence. Leadership is about serving others through encouragement, having the courage to stand up when needed, and shining a light. Teamwork, which is essential for working together in the church, at work or in their families at home. Excellence means listening to the instructions, understanding them, and applying the principles we learn to be safe and achieve our goals together!
The Canoeing Staff is dedicated to helping each camper overcome challenges and embrace the joy of learning or continuing new skills. We are excited to help them in developing the character traits that God is seeking to instill in His children!
